Yeah, after making this, I realized we would've been better off making a game from Game Maker instead. RPG Maker XP is really, really limited unless you're willing to script the hell out of it.

Spoilers below.

This game's good, or at least it was good until its broken-ness stopped me from being able to play it. After beating the Hotdog King and being thrust back to the start of the game, I am unable to enter the 9-11 store a second time. The screen goes pretty much black, music plays, but the game is frozen. Nothing I've tried fixes this, either... If nothing else, a save file from just beyond this point from anyone would be very much appreciated. Thanks...

Also same problem as Sergio's, which is a shame. I can just make out a kinda crumbly vertical path on the screen; looks like you get teleported to a map where you're stuck in the walls.

Another 'problem'; the vending machines don't actually reduce the amount of cash you have. So you can infinite amounts of monster or rabbit cola. Whilst this is really helpful, I don't suppose it's supposed to be like that.

Also, as far as I can tell, the Megabuster deals less damage than the figurine. The attacking animation is cool, though.

Love the game, took ever loving advantaged of the soda glitch ^^

BTW I'm stoked you put in the beginning theme to Captain Harlock in the intro screen. It made the old school otaku in me very happy.

Hmm. I've gotten to 'Megan the Mid Cashier', but every time I kill her, I get $20,000, 9,000EXP and a Pokeball, but she gives me a Gameover and I have to reload.

Do I need to kill Chad Daddy first? He can kill me in one hit and I can't even get a hit in with my Pokeball?

Also, the King Hotdog and his minions seem to give way more EXP and cash than any other mob.

Is it really possible to complete the first dungeon without the unlimited cans glitch ? A $100 can only heals 500, and to get one can you need to fight 6-8 battles which costs at least 6x300=1800 hp.

The game is designed to be really, really difficult like the original Phantasy Star or Dragon Quest. Be cautious!

Pick your fights wisely and run when you need to. Fight a little, collect money, then go back and recover. Approach it like you were a shut-in confronting the world for the first time.

"Approach it like you were a shut-in confronting the world for the first time."

Get advice for this game @.@

You really need to take it slow a lot of the time or you'll be dead real quick.

I just finished it and I loved it! Pretty normal RPG, but with a nice dash of black humor and nerd references.

Sooooooo, was the ending where it only says, THANK YOU FOR PLAYING THIS GAME, GAME OVER, the actual ending? It wasn't really a funny ending. I was expecting something beyond a game over screen.

How do you get the other endings?

Also, how do you beat the "super boss" he pretty much one hit K.Os you half the time.

Problems so far

Debug dungeon bosses lack half their background/graphics/music stuff. Also, got to the end but forgot to screenshot when asked.

It seems impossible to become a bad person again so you can fight the other cashier bosses.

At level 25, Chad is still unbeatable. the major problem here is that your weapon will never hit, Otaku Blow or whatever will only do ~300 damage, and because armour caps out at the suit, you can't ever get enough defense to survive him. Similarily, I can't get the three sisters ending anymore. I just get the event skip dialouge.

When I fight Megan the mid cashier, all my attacks seem to heal her (green numbers are healing, right?). What gives? I can't win.

Also, walls with hardness gaps make it trivial to pass the owl in the "pit stop" without talking to it and take all the $600 chests without fighting anything, if you want.

How do you get the good ending?
After beating megan the mid cashier in 1.01, she told me to try and improve myself more next time. Then i got gameover. Also, i hear there's another ending where the cashier is a monster?

Sponge,

Use the Megabuster to beat Megan. Though the game is over when you beat her.

Is that supposed to happen?

Behold! A map I made of the maze in the second dungeon:
http://img504.imageshack.us/img504/8426/mapmc9.gif

I throughoutly enjoyed this game, with only a few exceptions:
* The amount of monsters you had to kill to progress the story is just too much
* I found the dynamic ending system confusing. The actions altering the ending are just not logical. If you go to the cashier right after killing the hotdog king, it just skips to an ending, mentioning a girls named Mina (whom I hadn't even met since it skipped the whole encounter!?). However, if I left the dungeon, and entered it again, I would be able to enter the final dungeon (triggered if you are wearing the designer suit?). It also seems that the battle with the cashier(s) are solely based on your last conversation with the (awesome) Tutorial Owl (e.g. "I'm fine" resulting in you being able to just pay and having to fight all three)?
* The prices are insane, I simply cannot beat the God Cashier, and I suppose I need the pokeball which I am NOT going to grind monsters/sodas just to get (even though I'd really like to know the ending). Can't you release an alternate version with very reduced prices?

That's my only complains, I love the graphics-style; Paul is a genious.

Cheers.

This game looks bomb as hell, but makes my computer lock the fuck up when I try to run it.

I don't have the slightest clue as to what the hell the problem is, but your shit still looks pretty ill.

( I'm too lazy to go through the whole spiel of registering on and asking on some RPG-whatever forum to fix the problem, so I'll just pitch it here: what the fuck is the problem, anyway? )

Sorry dude, I've got no idea what the problem could be.

Are you running XP/2000 or Vista? Vista might need some patching but I have no idea how to help you with that. You might have to hit up one of those RPG Maker forums instead.

When I try to use the key to the secret dungeon, the game crashes with the message "Unable to find file Graphics/Characters/137-Chest 1". What gives?

Also, the ending kinda glitched up. I dunno what was up with that.

I'm using v. 1.0.1.1.

This isn't real life so no matter how much "will power" I have it doesn't affect the game one damn bit.

On that note. The enemies do to much damn damage! Seriously... I so happen to stumble across the Eve art book in his room. End up selling that so I could buy cola... which doesn't heal me much at all. (So I could start healing after my first fight, which I was hoping would put me ahead, it did not)

The enemies I do beat, don't give enough money. So I end up running out of health before I can even buy cola. Which even if I buy cola it doesn't return enough health to get me back on a half way level playing field.

I guess another way to put it, there is a lack of balance. There is a lack of fun. If I keep getting my ass handed to me, I don't want to play.

The game has potential. But the favor of the game seems to be heavily in the enemies favor.

This last bit may be silly.. But are Otaku really like this?

I'm siding with core on this one

1-3 hours of gameplay? Maybe, but that won't count the days of grinding it will take just to level up high enough where the first dungeon won't kill me.

Very nice game.

My first play through (v1.0), I got the text ending, with the GF dumping me after 3 months. I thought it was great. Nice game+ would have been nice, but it crashed, so I got v1.01.1

I got all the way to the Maid, which I beat, and I got the "You beat the game, Game Over" ending.

What gives? Did you remove the ending? Is it possible to finish the game anymore? I did everything but kill the Ubber bosses. They aren't killable, are they? Is there something else to do to get the new game+?

Great game. Thanks a lot. Ignore people telling you the game is too hard. They've obviously never played a real RPG ;)

Thanks for the bugfix!

I've now completed the game with the bad (vs. Mid Maid) ending, and the good (vs. three sisters ending), but when it asks me if I want to go to the new dungeon, I get a error telling me that a certain graphic is unavailable. T_T

I can't beat Chad either, from what I've experienced trying to beat him (at lv.22) the best way to inflict the most damage is to keep attacking with the pokeball - you'll probably hit him a couple of times, if you're lucky. Healing, I think, causes him to use his uberstrong attack in retaliation.

I also think that there should be an armour above the Designer Suit level, it would make getting through the good ending a lot less a matter of luck as to whether you get attacked for ~1800 damage or ~300 with the chip barrage.

In case it wasn't immediately apparent to everyone, the best way to grind after beating the King is to run from every party except the king and peasants, who drop $1000 and give 308 exp. Nothing else is worth your time.

P.S - for anyone finding it difficult to access the 'good' ending, you can check your progress with the card. Keep telling the final owl "I'm fine" and exiting until it displays a red card and tells you you're on the path to the good ending.

I wanted to give an update..

two things I messed up on, was:
-Did not get the Bikini Bible tan figurine asap
-Did not realize I could sleep in the bed to recuperate(Which was because I was not able to do it when I started out.. so had no clue it was possible. Silly me)

Who knew that the Bikini Bible tan Figurine was such a HUGE part.. of finally getting a finger in the crack of success.. in this game. *sighs*

I have to give credit to the creators for making such an annoying sounding boss (ps3 dude). Don't think I have wanted to kill a boss so bad before in my life.

Well followed Malefact's advice on the red card bit..

but then I got killed by the abomination.. *Sighs* I give up.. for now...

YOUR GAME IS FUCKING BROKEN AND YOU SHOULD FEEL BAD.

For one thing, the fucking difficulty (note not actual difficulty as in an actual challenge, but as in artificial "give every single advantage to the enemy" difficulty) is way too erratic. During the first half of the game you're a fucking pussy who can't take it through the FIRST FUCKING DUNGEON without doing grinding. Oh, look, the first fucking enemy KILLED ME. And by a miracle I make it to a boss, the boss pussy-whips me like the motherfucking fist of the North Star. And suddenly I find a weapon at it literally doubles my attack power. Oh, but that won't stop me from the SECOND FUCKING SET OF ENEMIES TO FUCKING PUSSY-WHIP ME LIKE 2 MOTHERFUCKING FISTS OF THE NORTH STAR.

And somehow, with 30 minutes of unnecessary grinding, I barely managed to beat the second boss. And then after more grinding, I managed to get enough money to buy the best armor in the game, and suddenly the game's a motherfucking cakewalk. HOLY SHIT, I'M SUDDENLY TAKING NO DAMAGE WHATSOEVER FROM THOSE STUPID OVERPOWERED BASTARDS AND NOW I GOT THE 2ND BEST WEAPON AND NOW I'M PUSSY-WHIPPING THEM LIKE THE MOTHERFUCKING FIST OF THE NORTH STAR JESUS CHRIST. And then I face the fucking optional boss, but then HE FUCKING KILLS ME WITH 1 FUCKING HIT. And I'm thinking, "Hmmm, this must be one of those very hard optional bosses. I better do some grinding, because luckily one of the group of enemies drop a shitton of money." And then after an hour of meaningless grinding, I get the best fucking weapon in the game, and then I face the boss head-on. BUT NO, HE STILL FUCKING KILLS ME IN 1 HIT AND I CAN'T DO JACK SHIT BECAUSE MY REGULAR ATTACKS ONLY HAVE A 2% CHANCE OF EVEN DOING ANY FUCKING DAMAGE.

Did you playtest this fucking thing? I want -- no, DEMAND you to fix this motherfucking game so that this game is, you know, PLAYABLE.

YOUR GAME IS FUCKING BROKEN AND YOU SHOULD FEEL BAD.

For one thing, the fucking difficulty (note not actual difficulty as in an actual challenge, but as in artificial “give every single advantage to the enemy” difficulty) is way too erratic. During the first half of the game you’re a fucking pussy who can’t take it through the FIRST FUCKING DUNGEON without doing grinding. Oh, look, the first fucking enemy KILLED ME. And by a miracle I make it to a boss, the boss pussy-whips me like the motherfucking fist of the North Star. And suddenly I find a weapon at it literally doubles my attack power. Oh, but that won’t stop me from the SECOND FUCKING SET OF ENEMIES TO FUCKING PUSSY-WHIP ME LIKE 2 MOTHERFUCKING FISTS OF THE NORTH STAR.

And somehow, with 30 minutes of unnecessary grinding, I barely managed to beat the second boss. And then after more grinding, I managed to get enough money to buy the best armor in the game, and suddenly the game’s a motherfucking cakewalk. HOLY SHIT, I’M SUDDENLY TAKING NO DAMAGE WHATSOEVER FROM THOSE STUPID OVERPOWERED BASTARDS AND NOW I GOT THE 2ND BEST WEAPON AND NOW I’M PUSSY-WHIPPING THEM LIKE THE MOTHERFUCKING FIST OF THE NORTH STAR JESUS CHRIST. And then I face the fucking optional boss, but then HE FUCKING KILLS ME WITH 1 FUCKING HIT. And I’m thinking, “Hmmm, this must be one of those very hard optional bosses. I better do some grinding, because luckily one of the group of enemies drop a shitton of money.” And then after an hour of meaningless grinding, I get the best fucking weapon in the game, and then I face the boss head-on. BUT NO, HE STILL FUCKING KILLS ME IN 1 HIT AND I CAN’T DO JACK SHIT BECAUSE MY REGULAR ATTACKS ONLY HAVE A 2% CHANCE OF EVEN DOING ANY FUCKING DAMAGE.

Core: glad the advice helped. Just so as you know, you don't actually have to defeat any of the bosses to get the "good" ending, just survive for a certain number of turns.

Just wondering, why is the character art for Mina that of a balding man, with 7-11 on his shirt? It's kinda...odd. Also, I get the impression that the text for that part of the ending is unfinished. Does that mean that the extra dungeon is currently in the works?

Time to post summore like a crazy man.

(Partially @ Vulcan Chap) Now that I've played through the game for quite some time, I'm going to drop in my two cents:

Some things that would make the game better:

1) Items, especially health replenishers, were cheaper. This would not impact on the whole "Hikikomori needs to return home" aspect of it, seeing as there are no items that restore your energy.

2) You had a couple more "Talents" thereby making having energy more important, but not vital to random battles. The replenish health talent does not heal you enough, so maybe it would be better to have a couple of upgrades to it either as you levelled up, hidden in chests or bought from the Owl or something.

2b) making some enemy groups weak to certain talents, or having certain easily discoverable tactics to add some variety and take away the monotony of fighting. For example, the hotdog king could summon hotdog men, the king of chips could retaliate when you killed one of his minions, and Colas could explode (like the bombs from FF) if they were left low on health.

3) You had more equipment-type items. The most important one would be a stronger armour, but some weapons that had different attributes (i.e hits all enemies, always hits, those are the ones I know RPGmaker can do) would be good. There is only one accessory in the game that I've found, having something that boosted Dodge would be dayum fine: you could make these rare drops for some enemy groups without 'em.

4) XP and $ returns from monsters, especially in the late game, were higher or at least more balanced. There is no reason to fight anyone but the hotdog king group, seriously.

But anyway, despite all these things, the game was still really enjoyable - because the thing that holds it altogether, the style and the concept - are very strong indeed.

So, thanks a bunch for making it!

I think all you guys (the commenters/players, not MF) might have mistaken this for a serious game that had production costs and professional developers and wasn't 55mb and FREE.
Seriously though, what's with all the comments being either suggestions or complaints about the game? If it was made to be a great game and I payed to play it, I might have been bothered in the least, but that wasn't the case. Nobody owes you a better game, and I doubt that the game is going to be re-made to cater to the people who thought it was a serious project.

It's a game that's good for some cheap laughs, and mainly just shows off the artistic/design abilities of the creators, and how nerdy (and /b/) they are.

Personally, I thought it was pretty hilarious the 15-ish minutes I played. GREAT JOB MECHA FETUS!

Also, probably 80% of the people who played it read about it on some indie game blog, and based their expectations on the Paul's name and thought, "Oh, it's made by that pirate baby guy, this game is going to be PURE GENIUS".

I come here cause I like that MF are all megaten dorks (hee ho!), and good artists who don't take themselves too seriously, so I guess that's probably why I didn't get super mad when playing this SERIOUS BUSINESS game.

Now i'm back in my apartment, and if i try to go into the 911 for food, i get a black screen with music and nothing else. Get V1.01.1, you have the old (and broken) v1.0.
You'll have to start a new game tough -_-;

I really liked the story in this game. I empathized with the main character and could feel my confidence as a player rise with his in-game confidence. Nicely done.

Indiegames.com promised me nudity, though... Those liars.

The difficulty of the optional end boss with the PS3 is clearly a meta statement: that is, as the target audience for this game is hikkikomori, they will be pleased by the endless grinding and lucky shots it needs to win against him. Anyone suggesting it is due to lack of testing or play balance is some kind of Luddite.

In all honesty, I can say that I can shit out a better polished game than this. If you have to level about 10-30 levels to progress one step at a very slow pace, that's just bad game design.

Oh, who an I kidding, YOUR COCKSUCKING PRODUCT OF A GAME HAS DONE NOTHING BUT DEDUCE ME INTO A GIBBERING MAN-APE THAT IS SCREAMING AND THROWING SHIT IN HANDFULS AT THE COMPUTER BECAUSE THERE WAS ABSOLUTELY NO FUCKING PLAYTESTING FOR THIS UNBALANCED PIECE OF SHIT. THE WHOLE FUCKING GAME HAS A DIFFICULTY SPIKE THAT GOES INFINITE DISTANCE OFF THE FUCKING SCALE. WHY DON'T YOU PLAY THIS FUCKING GAME YOURSELF SO YOU CAN SUFFER LIKE I DID?! FIX THIS FUCKING GAME.

Cavet, how well you're doing in terms of 'becoming normal' determines the cashier. You can check your progress with the card, and I think you can keep talking to the last Owl to get ++ normality. To beat the trio you just have to survive for about 6 turns or something, keep healing with Monster and hope you don't get raped.

@Dave

I'm sure the creators expected this.. on some level. If they posted it up, I am SURE they wanted comments.

That being said @ Celsus thanks for the info on only having to survive a certain amount of rounds.

I guess I will go grind some more enemies when I have the chance so hopefully I can finally beat the game.

whimper....

spent about 6 hours plugging away at this thing today, first got hosed because of not realizing you needed to action the exit to leave the dungeon, then because of not realizing you needed to cycle the last bird to be 'normal enough' to get a surviveable ending... now having ground up enough armour and mr. monsters that i theoretically ought to be able to survive through to the three-sisters ending, i get a talk about how she's always adored him from afar and a "how did you get past that last flag?" followed by a crash. haven't had any sucessful completions.

okay, continuing to try, the weird "get past that flag" thing seems to have been a glitch in running rather than coding (at least for now), though i have to join in with those who lament the ludicrous crit rating on god-cashier in the three-sisters fight. so many times through the same cutscene ;-;

The final area in 9-Eleven seems a bit silent after I leave to replenish energy back at home and re-enter the store.

The battle music is the only silence breaker.

Since you included the Harlock Opening, I'll give you some of my thoughts so far:

-Guy should be naked in the original portrait before he puts his clothes on
-Responses are recycled in the house, kind of lame.
-"x/Backspace for Cancel button" Except that it also opens the menu and it would be nice to correct that on the README
-Message about putting clothes on even though clothes are on when you leave the house
-If you take the clothes off after you leave the house the sprite still shows the clothes
-Might have been just me but I never saw any indication of a level up

You get a little thing saying LEVEL UP! in the corner of the battle screen if you level up after a battle.

It's not that noticeable though.

Now for another run at those bastard sisters..

Yay I completed it by skulling Monster Cola!

I liked the new text when it restarted.

I was so happy when I used the Key to the secret debug dungeon and it crashed.. otherwise I would have had to play more!

Anyway, excellent game.
I enjoyed the whole really-long-broken-path-to-final-boss thing, and the Undefeatable Final Boss who says stupid crap and one-shots you as soon as you start the battle.
Reminded me of FFX when I'd overlevelled the crap out of my party, was able to defeat the final boss in about 5 hits, and thought "yea, I'm great!", but then got owned by the Dark Aeons.
The opening sequence is the most hilarious thing of the lot, though.

Hoorah!

Is it just me, or is the Megabuster actually WEAKER than the BBT Figurine? I swear to god that the BBT does about 200-400 more damage per hit against every enemy except the Pepsi Bros. Also, it seems to have slightly better accuracy. I suppose it's the fact that Hikkikomori's STR is always going to be at a higher level than his INT, and that the buster uses INT to calculate damage, whereas the BBT uses STR. Am I right or what?

Also, goddamn you ChadWarden. You cheap bastard.

Yeah, the Megabuster is weaker but it actually hurts the cashier unlike your BBT Figurine and Otaku Burst which heal her. I don't think it has better accuracy because I was actually hitting less often with the stupid Megabuster. Now can someone tell me how to get the good ending. I keep beating the cashier and getting a game over.

I have one major complain: the second dungeon lags like hell.

To get the good ending, you have to think positive and be really fired up about doing everything.

Every conversation you have with anyone in this game counts. if there's a conversation option available, it'll probably matter towards your ending.

Also the last boss is impossible so don't try to beat him.

@ Core: not to much the Wusterl King give 1k and sometimes drop the megaburst for other 2.5k
I've got just 2~3 hour of play so far

@ Persona: Yes i know, i've got the red card and i'm "fighting" the trio, i'm using the hide option (defend i guess) but they continue to crit for 3600+
And my max HP is just 2800...

I've finally passed the battle against the sisters...
But, just like anon234:
"When I try to use the key to the secret dungeon, the game crashes with the message “Unable to find file Graphics/Characters/137-Chest 1″. What gives?"
Seriously what can we do about it?

Pretty cool! It reminds me of the first few times I played Nocturne on hard and died from the preta(s).

I laughed til I cried while playing this; welcome to NHK keeps flashing in my mind.

I still haven't beat it yet because those sisters are kicking my butt to high heaven but still, I am loving it.

Great work. It's much appreciated.

I'm wondering though, what's the last song from the audio folder from? It's listed as "water_relm" there.

Same here (°_°)

I went through the maid ending, boosted my personality with the owl and then got the ending where the cashier charges me 1000 and the game goes into story mode. If I agree to enter the debug dungeon I get an error message saying "Unable to find file Graphics/Characters/174-Chest01"

Also I dunno how to get the three sisters? Can someone enlighten me? It seems like I'm the only one lost.

I'd really like to play this game, but it is impossible. It refuses to acknowledge that I've pressed the up arrow. It processes down just fine. But not up. Also, the text scrolls by very quickly. I can usually read it, but its quite annoying and I can see it being a problem with longer text. It just seems to be completely messed up with regards to processing whether or not I'm pressing a key and which one it is. Sometimes I will start the game and the guy will go straight left and it will not be possible for me to get him to go to the right. Sometimes he will go straight up with no way to get him to come down.

I don't have an unusual keyboard or anything, its a Saitek USB gaming keyboard, I've had it for a couple years and never run into any issues at all with it. I'd be very appreciative if you could look into this for me!

Grats on the well thought out and well designed game, Persona, and everyone of the contributors!

I have beaten it... somewhat... But not the way I want to. Do you think you could e-mail me how to beat it with the good ending, or perhaps it's just by beating "Chad" first... hmmm...

Thanks again! Great work, and thanks for continuing to be a great inspiration! ^^

Man, you got a lot of whiny comments. Anyways, awesome game. I think it may have been marketed to the wrong crowd though based on what I read above me.

I'm level 32 with all the best equipment including a pokeball.
Still can't beat the inner ego dude. I made over 10000 HP damage. still no go...
Now it's very hard to level up cause the creatures barely provide the necessary experience for that.

According to my calculations, that dude is at least 8 more levels above me. meaning I'm going to need at least 48,000 experience points. (which in turn is about 4800 battles with the hot dog king, who gives the most XP)
Seems kinda hopeless and pointless...
